What is Worry?
When your mind is focused on thoughts of bad events that occurred in the past, or on bad events that may happen in the future, you worry. Any time you give undue attention to past or future events you are attacked by this demon.
The danger in this evil habit is that it keeps your mind focused on bad or evil events that may never happen or that is greatly blown up out of proportion.
Like all bad habits, the more you entertain it, the more power you give it. It is like feeding a dangerous monster. The more you feed it the bigger it grows.
Your concern grows worse every time you pay attention to it.
Anxiety is a faulty habit of mind. That means you have repeated it many times. So that it is more difficult to stop.
Worry started long ago in the Garden of Eden. Adam and Eve were worried because of their error or failure. They hid themselves among the trees of the Garden. Genesis 3:8-10
Since that time, no one is off the hook of this demon.
You cannot do without worry some how and at some times. That is why you need to learn how to deal with it.
The good news is you can conquer this bad habit and break free.
The Two Types of Concern
The Bible shows there are two types of anxieties. There is the positive or good concern which helps you to adequately prepare to meet the demands of the future. This you ought to entertain.
There is the second type which is negative and destructive as it blocks your mind and makes you less productive. This is the type you need to break free from.
The Bible uses the same Greek word “merimnao” for the two types of worry. It means a divided, anxious or distracted mind. How true are these words in the life of a chronic worrier?
Habit of Your Mind
The big hindrance in anxiety is that it is a negative state of mind.
It focuses your mind’s attention on negative events in the past or on bad events that may happen in the future
Since worry is a habit you cannot easily stop the repetition of the thoughts of bad events going on in your mind.
When you are facing any challenge, it is natural for your mind to figure out the solution to your problem.
Your mind is capable by using your memory to call back past events. It can also by the use of imagination project into the future.
Those tools are to help you cope and adapt successfully to your environment. But, in worry instances, the mind through the memory takes you back to the past and makes you feel as if you are living the bad event again and again.
As you entertain this habit, you are focus on negative thoughts such as:
• “If only I passed the examination……”
• “If only I had enough money…..”
The sad thing is, there is little you can do to redeem the past event. It has already happened! You can do nothing practically to fix the event of the past. So why are you wasting time and energy on things that you cannot change? Rather leave the past alone!
On the other hand through the tool of imagination, your mind can make you feel like a bad event is just about to happen or as if it is actually happening.
So you think something like, “what if..” For example, when you are fearful over your afternoon appointment you may think, “What if I arrive late at my appointment?” This type of concern is not so bad if you actually stand up to do all that is possible to arrive on time at your appointment.
Worry Is A Bad Habit
Worry is a bad habit, but like any habit, it can be broken. A habit is formed when you have repeated a thought or an act so often that you just keep on doing the same thing automatically. This you continue to do repeatedly without further thought or any conscious awareness of your action.
That you have done it many times before makes it difficult for you to conquer the habit. So that you need to plan to give your self time to break off from it.
