Why Study Habit?

The goal of every Bible Study program is to enable you form good habits and guide you to avoid forming bad or evil ones. Habit is a pathway in the brain. Every skill, education or training is a process of forming habits in the brain.

You know how easy it is for habits to form in youth. At this period the nerve tissue is most easily impressed and changed. Therefore, to form as many useful habits as possible you must start right now.

The world out there is organized to help you form useful habits. The society wants you to form desirable habits which will enable you in later years to take your place as a useful and dependable member of the community.

Don’t wait. Delay maybe dangerous.

In the formation or breaking of habits, there are several principles that must be observed. That is why this section is devoted to the consideration of habits in general.

It will:

1. Help you understand what is happening so that you can easily build good habits and avoid cultivating bad ones.

2.Be a good source of information if you are struggling to break bad habits or thinking of replacing bad habits with a better or more desirable ones.

Action Plan


Try This Now. Get you paper and pen.

1. Write down as many habits as you would like to form. Imagine the steps you need to take to form those habits.
Write the steps on the paper.
Write down the time frame that you feel you need to develop these habits.
Put your signature on your paper and put the date. Come back often to your note to review your desire.

2. Do the same for those habits you would like to break off from.

The essential thing is for you to start thinking of your habits. As you think of them, you gain more control over them.

This simple exercise is your first step in gaining full control over your habits.

What is a habit?

Habit is defined as the tendency to act time after time in the same old way. The force of habit controls the entire universe.

For example, it is a habit for the earth to revolve on its axis once every twenty−four hours and to move around the sun once every year. The sun rises and sets by the law of habits. The seasons demonstrate the same law.

When a pencil falls from your hand it has a habit of dropping to the floor. Once you fold a piece of paper it has the tendency to bend along the same points. These are examples of the force of habit in nonliving matter.

In living matter habit shows its power even more clearly. Notice how easily your hair may be trained to lie this way or that. You breathe by habit and your food is digested habitually.

These are examples of habit in living tissue. But there is one particular form of living tissue which is most susceptible to habit; that is your nerve tissue.

When you study the way your body works, you will understand why you are bound to have habits. You are really a bundle of habits.

Habits will develop whether you wish them or not. They manifest themselves in two ways: as habits of action and habits of thought.

The first kind occurs every time you tie your shoes, take a walk or drive down street. The second kind is more subtle.

For example, when I ask you what the first day of the week -------?

Your mind supplies the habitual answer without you thinking about it again.

Your speech or the way you talk, or what you say and how you say it, reveals in most instances your habit of thought.

Your mind is arranged in such habitual patterns, and from these examples you readily see that a large part of what you do and think during the course of twenty−four hours is habitual. Take good note of this, ten years to come you would be more under the control of your habits.

The conclusion is simple. Since you cannot avoid forming habits, it is important at this early stage in life, to form desirable and very useful habits.



What is Habit Force?

Habit ForceThe Habit Force is a Law of Nature which controls the entire universe. It gives power to all your repeated actions, making them automatic.

For example, you don’t need to think or make any decision about breathing.

You just go ahead and keep on breathing - in and out - without ever consciously thinking of it again.

The Habit force is in charge and so, breathing is a habit.

Your habits are very important as they determine the quality of your life.

They are greatly influenced by:

  1. Your environment and

  2. Your friends-companions.

Your friends help you form good or bad habits. Your mind is regularly drawing its thinking stuff from your surroundings.

Both your environment and friends Friends or Foes influence your action, and exercise controls over your opinions. They therefore, influence your habit force.

If you want to form a good habit, it is very important to select your environment and friends with great caution.

You are a Creature of Habits

You are a creature of habit. Everything about you is determined by your habit force.

From early infancy, you are influence by the law of habit.

Your actions, words, and thoughts form a channel in which you continuously seek to dwell.

Only by strong determination and painful effort can you decide to turn aside and move into new and fresh channel.

You are not aware the moment your habits are being formed. You get aware only when you are already under the control of this great power. It manifests only when habit force strongly pushes you to take certain action…..

A single action does not create a habit. It takes repeated action and maybe several times for months before a habit is formed.

A single thread would not form a rope. It contains only a very limited amount of strength. But what happens when you lay and twist many of them together?

You get a powerful cable which when attached to a ship could withstand the fiercest storm at sea.

That forceful cable represents your habit.

Your Habit is Your Choice:

You may not be aware of it, but you are costantly waving the threads of habit. Day by day, the strands increase, and are twisted tighter together.

Very soon, they would become strong and unbending cords. These cords of your habit bind you to practices and customs that eventually fix your character and thus your chances in life.

You wave a thread of habit any time you make a choice or take a course of action.

Your habits are as a result of decisions.

Your present state or condition is certainly the result of your past decisions and actions

Since most of your decisions are not based on the truth, it is very likely you have some bad habits to deal with.

You need to deal with them since they have the potential to prevent you from reaching your life goals.

The good news is, you are free to choose. You can take a new path in life.

You can make a decision today that would affect your entire life and change your future.

You can decide to conquer your bad habits. Make it your goal and choice.

Two Basic Kinds of Habits:

Throughout your life time, you would need to cultivate new healthy habits. At the same time, you would need to break bad habits. This is a continuous process.

You have two major types of habits.

They are:

  1. Desire Centered

    This habit force produces habits that are centered on your desire for health, success, happiness, prosperity and abundant life. These are life improving habits. They are responsible for all that you’ve achieved so far.


  2. Fear Centered

    This kind of habit force produces habits that are centered on your fears. They put brakes on your zeal and would not allow you to fully realize your potential.

    In that way, they hinder your progress in life. They make you accept your situation as permanent and unchangeable.

    At work and in general, these habits make you give less effort than you are capable of giving.

    They make you produce far less than your capability. Hence, they prevent you from achieving the success that you deserve.

    These habits make your success difficult if not impossible. You must conquer them!
