How to Form New Habit

Form New Habit - Bible study Topics on Habits

How to form New Habits

"Sow an act, and you reap a habit; sow a habit, and you reap a character; sow a character, and you reap a destiny." ~ G. D. BOARDMAN.

The first thing you should know if you want to form new habit is that it is a natural process.

It is like planting a seed in the soil. You are sure when you sow an act, you are going to reap a habit.

The second thing is for you to understand the central point in the process to form new habit. There is something that controls the process. It is what helps you to form new habit. It fixes the new habit and makes it permanent. The thing is the power of Repetition.

At the right season, a farmer plants his seed into the soil. This is what brings him the fruits in the future at harvest. He could not gather any fruit unless he first plants his seeds into the ground.

This is also true about your life. Success, prosperity, and happiness come through careful preparation. You can only enjoy a respectable old age through prudent reflection and action now that you are young. You need to plant the right seed so as to develop the right habit. This will make you enjoy the kind of old age that you are yearning for.

For example, if you desire success, then you must plant the seed of success and form new habit of success right now.

When you want to form new habit, your goal is to communicate with your subconscious mind. This is your habit mind. Book of Law God told Joshua how to go about the process to form new habit. God even gave him the methods to use:

“Do not let this Book of the Law depart from

your mouth; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful.” Joshua 1:8 (NIV)

Here are the methods to use to form new habit:

• Method 1: The Use of your mouth to declare the Word
• Method 2: Your Thinking or Meditation on the Word
• Method 3: Your Deeds or Actions

These three methods would do just one thing: impregnate your subconscious mind with your seed Word.

This mind is responsible to form new habit. It makes all your repeated acts habitual by making it automatic. Your main duty in the process to form new habit is to repeatedly sow your seed in the soil of your habit mind.

When the idea is accepted by your habit mind, the repetition becomes automatic so that your job is carried out without you consciously thinking of it.

After planting the seed word in the soil of your habit mind, it germinates automatically using the help of God without any further conscious effort from you.

Your ability to form new habit depends therefore on being careful to sow the right seed in your habit mind, and your capacity to wait patiently with determination, endurance and diligence.

Method 1: Use of Your Mouth

You cannot get something for nothing. So you must act to get result. The first action God impress on Joshua is the use of mouth. The highest quality of man is his ability to speak.

The word ‘man’ in Genesis means ‘a talker.’ God created human beings different from animals by giving them the ability to talk.

That shows the value God places on the use of your mouth, your tongue or your lip. The words that you speak often and repeatedly will surely manifest in your life or situation.

You know how God calls things that are not into physical existence through the word. Jesus says you will get whatever you “say.” Mark 11:23

So you’ve heard of confession, affirmations, and professions.

The Bible says:

“ “Thou shalt also decree a thing, and it shall be established unto thee; And light shall shine upon thy ways.” Job 22:28

This is the power of prayer. For your prayers to be powerful you must watch out, for the kind of words you use.

Here is one quick point. When formulating your affirmation or decree the goal is to make it all POSITIVE. It must be words that build up.

“Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.” Ephesians 4:29

You are sure your habit mind is listening any time you talk. When you give it words that build up others, you are in effect building yourself up.

Examples of Words of Affirmation or Confession

  • When in Need: “My God shall supply all my needs.”
    Philippians 4:19

  • To Create Wealth: “I am made rich in Jesus Christ”
2 Corinthians 8:9 “I have always sufficiency in everything”
    2 Corinthians 9:8

  • To Create Health: “With his stripes I am healed” Isaiah 53:5

  • When you are weak: “I am strong” Joel 3:10 “The Lord is the strength of my life.” Psalms 27:1

  • To deal with Challenge: “I abound unto every good work.”
    2 Corinthians 9:8

Method 2:Thinking or Meditation on the Word

Your thinking is the second method of sowing in your habit mind. You can form new habit with it. The best way here is to form the image like a painters Meditate Day and Night drawing in your mind of what you want or the situation you desire. Repeat the process as often as possible until the habit mind takes full charge.

"Then said he unto me, Son of man, hast thou seen what the elders of the house of Israel do in the dark, every man in his chambers of IMAGERY? For they say, Jehovah seeth us not; Jehovah hath forsaken the land." Ezekiel 8:12

This means you have a chamber of imagery. In this place, it is what you see that you get in life. You become what you behold either good or evil.

"But we all, with open face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord." 2Corinthians 3:18
You are changed to the image you behold. You are changed to the image you See.

Hebrews 12:2 says, “Looking unto Jesus…” You are to keep looking unto Jesus….so as to be of course more like Him.

Get up now and picture mentally the things you really want and by God’s law of habit it will come to you. This could really help you become the person you desire to be.

Follow the farmer. Clear the soil of your habit mind of any unwanted seed. Then fix your mind on the picture of what you want to accomplish. See only the finish product. It could be the new personality or character that you desire. The success you want to attain or even the material supply you want from God.

When you have seen the image clearly, think about it for a while then make your prayer. You can now take off your attention from your exercise. You can repeat the process as many times as possible until you form new habit easily.

Method 3: Your Deeds or Actions

You form new habit through action. When you repeat the same action as a duty or routine, it becomes a habit.

If you want to be rich, start by acting rich. If you want to prosper, start now by acting as someone very prosperous.

The trick here is simple. Your habit mind does not know you are acting a play. It faithfully carries out the order sent to it by your repeated play-acting.

To for new habit that would make your life successful and happy in future, you must start right Now. There is not hope waiting for tomorrow. It would never come. Tomorrow has no end. If it comes, through the law of habit, another is just at the door. It will come without end.

So start now. Form new habit right now. Such habit that would make your tomorrow better and pleasant. Don’t plant a seed that you would need effort to uproot later. The togue is difficult to tame. Yet I precribe you tame your thought, your Actions and your tongue all at the same time. Don’t wait!
