Life is like a race and how you start the race matters. Of course, you know you need a good start in life. Jesus wants you to count the cost before you start. Hence you need to be moderate. Are you prepared for the efforts and ready to give all it takes to make it in life? Do you know what you have to give in order to achieve the result desired?
If you want to qualify in this life’s race, you have to persevere in regular daily practice of putting your body and the desires of the flesh under control. ~ 1 Corinthians 9:27; James 1:3-4
Why you need to be moderate
You have to be moderate because life is a race. There is no need to start this race unless you are prepared in advance to give all it takes to win the gold.
If you are aiming to run and win the gold medal, you would have to count the cost before you ever get started. If you desire to be the best, the one who receives the first prize, then you are required to be temperate in all things.
“Know ye not that they which run in a race run all, but one receiveth the prize? Even so run; that ye may attain. And every man that striveth for the mystery is temperate in all things. Now they do it to obtain a corruptible crown: but we an incorruptible.” ~1 Corinthians 9:24-25
To avoid life's great danger you need to be moderate. It will give you peace of mind, trouble free family and lasting relationships. It will give health to your body.
It will surely and steadily leads you from penury to plenty. Make use of your youthful strength and lay a solid fondation of great life with Jesus. Blessing comes when you learn to be moderate in all things.
Life requires Training. Training means discipline. Therefore every disciple or follower of Jesus will have to be moderate in the following areas: Life requires Training. Training means discipline. Therefore every disciple or follower of Jesus will have to be moderate in the following areas:
Food
Sleep
Drink – Wine is a mocker

Sex
Be not among drunkards or among gluttonous eaters of meat, for the drunkard and the glutton will come to poverty, and slumber will clothe them with rags. - Proverbs 23:20-21
The Bible counsel is you do not give your strength to women, not to wine or to strong. Proverbs 31:1-31
You should keep your right mind by giving no room to drunkenness. Galatians 5:21. That is the only way to have a perfect vision of where you are going and a clear judgment of situations around you. You need to watch where you are putting your feet.
Don’t allow wine to take away your understanding. Hosea 4:11
Avoid the first Time
The first safety rule against bad habit or lack of moderation is never to permit the first time. Your friends are heavy cigarette smokers. The temptation is to join them. Never accept the first offer. Don’t take the first stick
The best way out to avoid their club of big wine drinker is to not accept the first cup. The best way to victory is to watch diligently and avoid any bad action you want to carry out for the very first time.
The first time decision is very important as it could lead you to success or to failure. Any time you are meeting a situation for the first time, you have to think twice before you decide. Then think again before you act on your decision. It seems like procrastination. No. It is merely putting your safety belt on.
You have a guide in life. It is your Bible. It is there to show you what God wants you to do. The Holy Spirit given you from God will speak to your heart.
Therefore don’t take the first time issues lightly. For it could determine your final destination in life. Consider yourself in a race in which it takes self discipline to run and perseverance to win.
Be temperate in all things. This Bible counsel is not only for youth but also for the:
Bishop ~1 Timothy 3:2
Women ~ 1 Timothy 3:11 and
Aged Men ~ Titus 2:2
And of course, for you in your tenderly age. You would need it to keep your life safe from evil. Abstain from all forms of evil. Don’t accept the first cup. Stop drinking damnation.
Don't Quit
To be moderate you have to keep on trying. Moderation is a discipline which takes effort.Even when you fall or fail, don't forget to stay on. Keep trying.
When you have done your best, it is then you have to keep at it. You have to keep on standing until you make it. Why? There is no place for those who quit. – Hebrew 12:1
Let me remind you of Demas who left Paul on the mission field.
“..For Demas forsook me, having loved this present world, and went to Thessalonica.” ~ 2 Timothy 4:10
True, Demas started well. He entertained no interest in wine or alcohol. He has seen the great damage it could bring to human body, mind and soul. Thank God, Demas started life without any addiction to sex or food. He went through all the training to make him one of the best followers of Jesus in the company of Paul.
Demas must have taught others the great lesson on the evil of lack of moderation. Yet, Demas failed to reach the finish line of his Christian race. He fell out of love with the world and found deep affection and new attachment to the world.
Demas left Paul, abandoned his mission and forgot the heavenly race to pursue temporary pleasure. Demas, Paul wrote, love the present world more than any heavenly glory.
Hence the Bible encourages everyone to be temperate and be moderate in all things.
Moderation Brings Rewards
There are rewards when you overcome - 2 Timothy 4:7-8; 1 Corinthians 3: 10-15
You are special, a very peculiar person. You hold your whole world in your own hands. You are not permitted to mess it up. Therefore, compose yourself. Dress-up yourself as a true queen or king. Be royal and people would treat you in like manner.
Therefore:
“Let your moderation be known unto all men.......” ~Philippians 4:5 Moderation will show you how to be in control, live peaceful life and renew your youth like the eagle’s. ~ Psalms 103:5
