What is a Bad Habit?

Bad Habit - Bible study Topics on Habits

What is a Bad Habit?

It is whatever action you repeat often yet could hinder your progress in life. Any act guided by fear and which makes you anxious or worried unnecessarily is not good.

In general, any action beyond your control which makes you feel terrible about yourself cannot help you. Here is the sorrowful declaration of King David in the Bible about his sinful habits:

"My sins have taken such hold upon me that I am not able to look up; my heart faileth me."
~ Psalms 40:12

A Ship out at Bay

Have you seen a ship out in the bay? You see the sails are all up. It swings with the tide and the waves. Yet, it refuses to move. Why? It is simply because deep under the water it is anchored!

So in life you often see a young person apparently well equipped, well educated, and you wonder why she’s not making progress. In many cases, you will find that she is anchored secretly to bad habits. She can never move or succeed until she breaks free.

A bad habit may not necessarily be something evil. It is however sure to hinder your progress. Secret sins prevent you from success and happiness. They take hold of you and make everything around you to fail.

The Lion and Its Master

A master Lion trainer brought home a lion. He initially discovered the animal was weak and harmless. So he gave no thought and never attempted to control it.

However, everyday, the lion gain a little more strength and became a little more out of control. At last, the Lion became restless, fell upon its master and tore him to pieces.

The moral in this story is clear. The weak, and little bad habit easy to master now, may grow up one day like this little Lion to destroy your entire life.

The Little Foxes

Who knows? The habit you consider no more desirable for your progress in life may one day gain enough power to overcome and tear you into pieces. Little sin kills as fast as great and big ones.

You can do nothing with little foxes. The Bible commands you to take them away. Deal with them now because you have the will power and youthful energy and determination carry through your desire. Do it now. Take away any little foxes:

Take us the foxes, the little foxes, That spoil the vineyards; For our vineyards are in blossom.
~ Song of Solomon 2:15

Never look at sin. You will find temptation everywhere. Bad habit is often good package in to attract you.

Your friends, neighbors and relatives would invite you to participate in their worldly vain show. But be wise and follow the golden rule.

What is the golden rule to bad habit?

The golden rule is simple. Ask yourself if you:
Are ready to give in to this act for the rest of your life?

If not, don’t ever yield to it even for once. Yes, refuse to accept even the first occasion.

If you have fallen and thinking of your way up. Then never allow the occasion to follow the old pathway.

Think, act and talk in a very different way.

Motivation to Break the Bad Habit

Are you wondering why you need to break free from your bad habit? Take a walk. Go quickly to the nearest graveyard. There you will discover what bad habit has done to noble men and ladies. You will find the same list of evil afflicting people living all over the world.

Let them tell you how by a simple wish to get a glass of beer it has led thousands of gentlemen and ladies to the drunkards' graves.

Let the graveyard motivate you to break the bad habit.

Bad habit appears gradually

You know it. How you deform yourself daily with little indulgence. It is initially such a pleasure - a feeling of having a good time.

But at last it turns out to enslave you until you are a totally different person. You are totally changed but for the worse.

Maybe your secret sins have made cutting even in your cheeks. They have given you permanent marks.

Sin is gradual. It will never break out on you suddenly. Evil Jesus says is from the heart. It must be rooted out from there. Your mind first committed repeatedly the murder, adultery, theft, before they are committed in deed.

Don’t allow the little foxes mess up your life.
