Divorce
Divorce represents one of the major problems facing today’s society.
About 50% of marriages break up within five years.
Separation occur for many reasons including adultery, cruelty, abandonment, drunkenness, and neglect to provide for family needs, conviction of crime, bigamy, incompatibility and etc.
Are all the reasons enough for the high break ups?
The good new is, there are Bible principles that would make your marriage peaceful and joyful…
KEY VERSE: “And I say unto you, whosoever shall put away his wife, except it be for fornication……….”
Matthew 19:9a
Bible Passage : Matthew 19:3-13
Let us approach this lesson by attempting to answer a few questions:
Is there any Biblical Reason for Putting Away?
Yes. There is only one. That is fornication. Matthew 19:9
What does the word fornication means?
It means sexual relations outside marriage. Does it mean then that the innocent partner is expected to forgive the guilty one if he or she confesses and forsakes such dishonest acts? Proverbs 28:13
Putting away was not in the original setup of marriage.
Matthew 19:4-5.
How long is a Marriage contracted?
It is until death breaks it. Matthew 19:6.
In marriage, it was a miracle to find two individuals become one flesh. Therefore only God can break the union.
If a wife is divorced and marries someone else who later dies, can she return to her first husband?
No, definitely not permitted for it is an abomination.
Deuteronomy 24: 1-4 clearly forbids such an action.
Can the innocent partner in a break-up re-marry?
It is doubtful if there is such a thing as an innocent partner. It is most likely that the “innocent” partner failed in some ways.
Why should you avoid it like a plague?
• It represents a tragedy that has undermined the family, the very basis of society.
• Misery always follows in its path, broken homes, bruised and broken hearts, bewildered, homeless children, delinquent youth, loneliness, tears, sorrow, and at times suicide or insanity.
• Where there are children, the couple should consider the welfare of the children. The children would have to suffer most of the shame and scandal associated with sudden separation.
• It is not tolerable regardless of the circumstances. For it is a public admission of utter failure. It belittles the power of Christ. The Bible says, you can do all things through the Power of Christ. Philippians 4:13
• Economic disaster often follows divorce. Finance or money is often the cause of lack of love and happiness in marriage.
